LEARNING, TEACHING AND TRAINING ACTIVITIES
1. THE FIRST STEP: A STAFF TRAINING EVENT.
CANGAS DEL NARCEA, SPAIN, 7th-9th November 2018
In November 2018, we started out
our joint journey with a Staff Training Event in Cangas del Narcea,
Spain. Mónica and Valeria from Macerata, Dzintra and Zanda from Ugale;
Danka and Anna from Orneta; six teachers visiting Cangas for the first time
and concocting what would be a fruitful relationship between our four
schools. It was really exciting to get to know each other in the flesh and very
useful for planning the upcoming activities.
Three days packed with many interesting events. Participants learnt how to use new applications guided by qualified teachers, observed cooperative learning techniques and made valuable visits linked with the objectives of the project in order to see how to preserve traditions and use local resources.

3.SECOND MOBILITY: BEEKEEPING, AN OPTION FOR THE FUTURE, ORNETA, POLAND
ORNETA, 1st-7th June 2019
As part of this
mobility, a beehive was built in the school
garden and a workshop dedicated to the role of bees in human life was
held. An experienced and professional
beekeeper introduced the beekeeping job and presented basic issues
related to this profession. In addition, there was a workshop on making candles
from beeswax and tasting of various types of honey.
A culinary
competition was held for the best dish with the use of honey where the winners
were Spanish and Latvians.
During the city
game, the students got acquainted with the location, history and monuments in
Orneta.
During their
stay in Lidzbark Warmiński, the students visited the castle of the Warmian
bishops, the Warmian baths and became acquainted with the history of the
region.
Workshops on
integration in the form of common traditional dances, singing common songs
popular in given countries, joint games and games have contributed to building
bonds between countries.
A visit to the
concentration camp in Sztutowo brought closer the history of the Holocaust from
World War II.
In addition,
during a visit to an agritourism farm, the students became acquainted with the
art of making clay pots and familiarized themselves with herbs growing in the
fields.
The students
also made a trip to Gdańsk, becoming acquainted with the history and monuments
of the city as well as visiting the experimental center where they could
perform experiments on their own.

4. THIRD MOBILITY: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OUR HERITAGE, CANGAS DEL NARCEA, SPAIN
CANGAS DEL NARCEA, 29th February-6th March
The activities at school began on the 2nd March. Latvian and Polish delegations spent the 1st March with their host families and visited different places around the area. Unfortunately, Italian delegation had been forced to cancel their visit because of the Covid-19 virus just a few days before.
The first day at school, after wellcoming activities, participants visited the exhibition at the School Library. During the visit, Spanish teachers and students presented the municipality of Cangas del Narcea, its heritage, the main local produce, traditional sports and games. After that, visitors did a guided walk around the town center and they also attended a reception at the Town Hall in which delegations could exchange information about their cultures and countries with the Major of Cangas del Narcea.
On the 3rd of March, participants spent the day in the city of Gijón, in the seaside. The visit to the Universidad Laboral (City of Culture), the ethnographic museum “Museo del Pueblo de Asturias” and a guided tour around the historic center of the town were included.
On the 5th of March, the local programme of Onda Cero Radio was broadcast from the Auditorium of our school. It was conduced by a group of students of the IES Cangas del Narcea and some visitors (students and teachers) were interviewed. Italian coordinator, Valeria Annibali, participated also, through a phone call. Italians could follow the emission on the Internet.
Other activities developed during the week were:
· Visits to a bakery and a honey
packaging factory.
· Visit to the local Museum of Wine.
· Visit to a craft workshop of “madreñas”, a traditional wood clog that everybody wore in this area. Nowadays this workshop is the only one that it is still working in a big area of Asturias.
·
Lessons on “bolo vaqueiro”,
during the Physical Education lessons at the school and including demostrations
by members of the Bolo Vaqueiro Association.
· Workshops at school, with different groups of students and teachers (not only those more directly involved in our project from the beginning): meeting new people, discussing about heritage and its potential, learning to cook “tortilla de patata”...

5. FOURTH MOBILITY: LATVIAN TRADITIONAL CRAFTS, UGALE, LATVIA
VIRTUAL MOBILITY, UGALE, 5th-10th May 2021
Ugale Secondary
school in Latvia is placed in the countryside, in the region where in the
ancient times a lot of craftmen used to live. People in Latvia are also big
dancers and singers, there are folk dance groups almost in each parish. Due to
these facts and according to the planned activities in the project, the
students who were involved in the project created several presentations and
workshops to show our cultural heritage of the country.
They were the
following:
- On the first day of the virtual meeting, the senior students of our school presented the video with an insight into a school and a parish showing the most famous places in there. They made an interactive quiz about school and local parish for the participants from Spain, Poland and Italy.
- On the second day of the meeting Cooking workshop was arranged. Pies with boiled carrots and potato pancakes were cooked. All the process of cooking was shown and following the instructions the products were being made by each country’s participants.
- The next day was devoted to the Latvian signs which is a big value in the culture of the country. These signs you can see in almost every piece of craftmen's work, like in knitted gloves and mittens, in weaved blankets and carved woodspoons.
- On the fourth meeting day the participants of the project could virtually visit Ugale Lutheran Church and the only Organ building workshop here in Latvia which is situated nearby the church. They could get acquainted with the display of different crafts in this workshop.Afterwards the display, students who had made the presentation, created an interesting interactive crossword to get to know what the participants got to know about the ancient Latvian crafts and history.
- The final day was devoted to the dance and song heritage of the country. They introduced the partners from Italy, Spain and Poland with our national folk costumes for both, male and female, they made a video where students from Ugale Secondary school take part at National Dance and Song festival in the capital city Riga.
